Also known as Doña Vita, Mama Vita is the family matriarch and my grandmother. Born and raised in the remote hills of Durango. She had a pair of clothes for sleeping and a pair of clothes for the day. While washing her clothes in the river with her sisters, a man on a horse appeared. That man was my grandfather, Maximilion de Leon Garcia Luna.
He took her to the city of Mexicali, where he bought her many dresses. Mama Vita started a business, a tortilleria. She was so successful she hired on others and, after my grandfather passed, she raised all seven children on her own. My mother was one of those children, a sweet and sensitive child with the strength and tenacity of a lion. Akin to my grandmother, she is a desert rose.
